Diamonds or Light
It was days like this that were so simple: get home before the streetlights came on and all would be great. It was a time of prosperity like no one had known. We all moved out to the west in the great migration. We were now in Oakland, California. It was my first day at school and no one looked like me except my brother.
The teachers didn’t really pay attention to me. As long as I kept my head down and did my work. I had to set an example for Richard Jr. He was six and I was seven. I had a lot of responsibility riding on my shoulders.
My Mom always reminded me of that. She said if I didn’t do my best, there would always be someone waiting to take my spot….
